Battle of Dualities

As you observe the reality around you, you can’t help but notice that we live in a world of polar opposites, or what I call “dualities”. There is darkness and light, cold and heat, love and hate, left and right brain hemispheres, etc. But the most interesting and mysterious duality of all is the duality of the conscious and subconscious mind. Our thoughts, beliefs, memory and imagination are all products of the conscious mind. The conscious mind is the part of our psyche that we automatically identify with – “I think, therefore I am”. However, most people are completely oblivious to the fact that it only represents half of the story. As part of the mind’s duality, the subconscious mind contains beliefs that stand in polar opposite to everything that we consciously believe.

Let’s illustrate: suppose you think of yourself as a a good person with all the corresponding attributes, such as integrity, kindness, selflessness, etc. What you don’t realize is that there is a subconscious part of you with diametrically opposite beliefs, such as dishonesty, hostility, and selfishness. One side of duality cannot exist without the other – they are both integral parts of your entire consciousness. The duality is created when you consciously identify with the “good” part as “you” and the “bad” part as “not you”. This does not, however, make the “bad” part go away. In fact, it remains in your subconscious and begins to manifest events and situations in your life where you begin to exhibit dishonesty, hostility, selfishness and all the other qualities that you so vehemently oppose.

Since you are not consciously aware of this part of you, you begin to think that these negative events are coming at you from the outside world when in reality you are the sole author and the creator of all this negativity. The only way to rectify this is to bring these subconscious beliefs into your conscious awareness and start balancing the dualities. It’s a pretty straightforward process, but you need to know exactly what you’re doing, otherwise it can throw your entire world off-balance. If you’d like to learn more about it, just leave a comment and I’ll try to elaborate.

  1. Galatians 5:17
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”
